At Wrestle Kingdom 18, Ospreay, Jon Moxley and David Finlay battled it out to determine who would be crowned the IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion.
Will Ospreay was on top for a lot of the match, however, Bullet Club War Dogs Alex Coughlin & Gabe Kidd provided interference in the closing stages. Despite Moxley and Ospreay eventually fighting off Coughlin and Kidd, Finlay was able to walk out of The Tokyo Dome with the title.
At New Year Dash on January 5th, a 5 on 5 match between United Empire and Bullet Club War Dogs went to a no contest.
After the chaos had subsided, Will Ospreay declared that February 11th would be his final appearance for the promotion. Finishing his full-time career with the promotion by fighting alongside his allies, Ospreay declared a 5 on 5 war between the two groups and that his opponents could pick the rules.
Finlay accepted the challenge, making the war a 10-man steel cage match. This will be the first time that a cage match has taken place in New Japan in nearly 20 years, which saw Hiroshi Tanahashi beat Kazunari Murakami by KO inside the structure back in 2004.
While many fans are hoping for a long list of first-time-ever matches for the British wrestler, one AEW star is already looking for a rematch. Prior to their clash at Wrestle Kingdom 18, Jon Moxley called out Will Ospreay for another one-on-one encounter, stating that it is only the beginning of their rivalry.
This is going to be a wild 2024 for AEW once Ospreay officially signs.
