WWE Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff recently addressed the much-discussed potential return of former WWE wrestler CM Punk to the wrestling world. Punk was released by All Elite Wrestling (AEW) earlier this month, sparking speculation about a possible WWE comeback. Despite the surprise factor, considering Punk’s extensive history with WWE, his return shouldn’t be ruled out.
During an appearance on the Strictly Business podcast, Eric Bischoff suggested that Punk could consider returning to WWE to conclude his wrestling career on a high note. Bischoff emphasized that Punk might have around three years left in his wrestling career and could capitalize on the opportunity to leave on a positive note rather than a negative one, provided he recognizes and takes responsibility for his past actions and behavior.
Bischoff elaborated, “If Phil Brooks is the type of man that, first of all, recognizes it and realizes that he’s at least fifty percent responsible for it, if not more, the way he’s handled himself and conducted himself.”
He went on to explain that such a return could be beneficial for both WWE and Punk, potentially revitalizing his wrestling legacy. However, he also noted that if Punk doesn’t seize this opportunity, he could fade into obscurity as a “cult” wrestling star, with little remembrance in the years to come.
CM Punk’s association with AEW came to an abrupt end following reports of his altercation with fellow wrestler Jack Perry during the All In pay-per-view event at Wembley Stadium in London. AEW subsequently terminated his contract, citing the unanimous recommendation of their Discipline Committee and outside legal counsel.
After an approximately seven-year hiatus from professional wrestling, Punk joined AEW in 2021, though his time there was marked by frequent injury issues. His return to the promotion in June 2023 saw him secure a second AEW championship. Prior to AEW, Punk had a storied career with WWE, winning the WWE championship twice and the world heavyweight championship three times. Additionally, he ventured into UFC with two fights following his departure from WWE in 2014. Punk had been under WWE contract from 2005 to 2014.
