As previously reported here on eWn, WWE has released Matt Riddle from his contract. The “Original Bro” received the news of his release around 5:00 PM EST on Friday.
In response to his release, Riddle took to Twitter (see below) to express his gratitude to the fans and assure them that he would be making a return soon.
Earlier this month, Riddle made headlines due to an incident at JFK airport where he accused a Port Authority agent of inappropriate behavior. Since that incident, Riddle had been absent from television screens.
While there were initial reports suggesting that his absence was unrelated to the airport incident, Riddle had not been spotted backstage at TV tapings or live events. Furthermore, WWE had removed him from several weekend live events and the September 11th episode of RAW.
According to a report from Fightful Select, WWE had no plans for Riddle’s return and had excluded him from their creative plans following the airport incident. It’s worth noting that Riddle was previously involved in a storyline with Drew McIntyre, which was ultimately scrapped.
Finally, it was mentioned that Riddle had been engaged in grappling training earlier in the week and was reportedly in good spirits before his release. However, one source indicated that Riddle had exhausted too many chances during his tenure in WWE.
