A record that has stood unchallenged for over three and a half decades has finally been broken.
Gunther has officially outpaced the Honky Tonk Man’s legendary 454-day tenure as the WWE Intercontinental Champion, a benchmark that included 34 notable title defences. Today marks GUNTHER’s 455th day holding the prestigious title, etching his name in the WWE annals as the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion.
The remarkable journey began on June 10, 2022, during a memorable face-off with Ricochet on an episode of “WWE SmackDown.” Since securing the championship, GUNTHER has risen to the occasion, triumphing in 15 separate title defences.
His pathway to the historic record met a final hurdle in the formidable Chad Gable. Displaying tenacity and skill, GUNTHER emerged victorious in their encounter this past Monday on “WWE Raw,” notching a pinfall victory that cemented his standing in the WWE chronicles for what may be a long time to come.
Walter Hahn is no stranger to setting high bars in championship reigns. Since entering the WWE sphere in 2019, he has showcased a habit of rewriting history books.
His resume includes an impressive reign as the “NXT UK” Champion, a title he held for an unparalleled 870 days following his victory in April 2019.
It was only in August 2021 that he relinquished the title to his perennial adversary, Ilya Dragunov.
This stint was further highlighted when the title was unified with the “NXT” Championship in September 2022, a testament to GUNTHER’s remarkable career and the epic narratives he has crafted in the wrestling universe.
