All Elite Wrestling (AEW) has severed ties with CM Punk following a recent backstage altercation. This contentious event reportedly unfolded last week during the All In event held at Wembley, where Punk, whose real name is Phillip Brooks, engaged in a heated confrontation with fellow wrestler Jack Perry. The altercation prompted a week-long probe, culminating in the termination of Punk’s contracts with AEW, both as a wrestler and employee. After a careful deliberation, Tony Khan — the son of Fulham owner Shahid Khan — came to a unanimous decision to recommend Punk’s immediate dismissal from the company. This marks another chapter in Punk’s career that is marred by controversies.AEW general manager Khan confirmed the news in an official statement, which read: ‘Phil played an important role within AEW and I thank him for his contributions. The termination of his AEW contracts with cause is ultimately my decision, and mine alone.
Of course, I wish I didn’t have to share this news, which may come as a disappointment to many of our fans.
‘Nevertheless, I am making the decision in the best interests of the many amazing people who make AEW possible every week – our talent, staff, venue operators and many others whose efforts are unsung but essential to bringing our fans great shows on television and at arenas and stadiums throughout the world.’Looking back, Punk’s journey with AEW had been rocky. Just a year prior, in September, Punk found himself amidst a serious altercation with The Elite at the All Out event which resulted in a triceps injury. This incident planted seeds of doubt regarding his future with AEW.Before his time in AEW, Punk was a prominent figure in WWE. His tenure there ended in 2014 owing to disagreements with the management. A lengthy hiatus from wrestling followed, lasting seven years until his return in 2021 when AEW welcomed him into their roster. At Wembley last week, Punk was featured in the opening match against Samoa Joe. However, the confrontations that ensued backstage with Perry after the match led to speculative suspensions of both individuals, with investigations eventually steering towards Punk’s departure from AEW.As the wrestling community reflects on Punk’s illustrious yet turbulent career, many wonder what the future holds for the veteran wrestler post his AEW exit.
