This week, All Elite Wrestling (AEW) conducted its third annual Grand Slam event in New York City. Despite facing initial challenges in ticket sales, a last-minute surge was observed.
Earlier in the week, it was reported that ticket availability for Grand Slam at Arthur Ashe Stadium was considerable, with thousands of seats remaining unclaimed by Tuesday. While a Buy One Get One deal saw quick sales for the $30 loge seats, a significant number of closer-to-the-ring seats were still available, attributed by fans to high ticket prices and the consistent venue.
However, a turnaround was noted on Wednesday. As per Wrestling Headlines, AEW experienced its highest final day ticket sales in the history of the company, selling 11,000 tickets for the event. This sudden boost in sales is likely attributed to last-minute promotional efforts, including interviews by CEO Tony Khan and wrestling icons Chris Jericho and MJF.
Although the stadium wasn’t fully occupied, the sales figures were notably close to those of the previous year’s event.
On the day of the event, fans witnessed a live Dynamite show featuring MJF defending his AEW Championship against Samoa Joe, while Saraya retained the AEW Women’s World Championship by overcoming Toni Storm. Furthermore, a two-hour Rampage episode was recorded, scheduled for a Friday broadcast on TNT.
In related news, AEW All In attracted an impressive crowd of 81,035 in London the previous month, setting a new record for attendance at a professional wrestling event. Post-event, Excalibur revealed that the next edition is slated for a return to the UK, scheduled for Sunday, August 25, 2024, at London’s renowned Wembley Stadium.
