WWE Engages in Legal Battle Worth Over $5 Million, Attempted Acquisition of UK Independent Promotion Revealed by Will Ospreay
In a surprising revelation, Will Ospreay disclosed that WWE once pursued the acquisition of the UK-based independent wrestling promotion, Revolution Pro Wrestling. Ospreay made this revelation after successfully defending his IWGP United Kingdom Championship against Yota Tsuji at the NJPW Destruction event held at the World Hall in Kobe, Japan.
Following the thrilling match, Ospreay accepted a challenge from fellow British wrestling sensation Zach Sabre Jnr for an upcoming showdown at NJPW Royal Quest III, scheduled for October 14th at London’s Copper Box Arena. During his post-match address, Ospreay not only commended Revolution Pro Wrestling but also unveiled WWE’s previous attempt to purchase the promotion.
He stated, “A small independent UK company was offered a million dollars by WWE, and they declined it because of their unwavering belief in Revolution Pro Wrestling. I share that belief in Revolution Pro Wrestling, but more importantly, I believe in the talent under this flag [the UK flag] and our professional wrestlers. I eagerly anticipate bringing New Japan back to Royal Quest.”
WWE has a history of collaborating with independent wrestling promotions, such as Insane Championship Wrestling and PROGRESS, to broadcast both archived shows and new content, featuring current Superstars like Drew McIntyre and Gunther. In a significant move, WWE established a partnership with EVOLVE in 2020 after initially teaming up with the promotion in 2015.
