The UFC-WWE Merger: A Powerful Marketing Synergy

by | Sep 22, 2023 | WWE News | 0 comments

As the UFC and WWE, two prominent combat sports entities, unite under TKO Group Holdings, the spotlight turns to TKO’s strategies for advancing these brands. Mary Beth Furst, a clinical professor and associate area chair of marketing at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, believes that TKO can navigate the challenge of maximizing these brands’ marketing potential with ease.

Drawing inspiration from successful examples like Procter & Gamble’s coexistence of Tide and Gain or Unilever’s lineup of Magnum, Wells, and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, Furst emphasizes the importance of attracting complementary target markets. Each brand must define its unique value and differentiating factors for customers.

For instance, Ben & Jerry’s appeals to sustainability-conscious consumers with its playful and eco-friendly approach, while Magnum positions itself as a super-premium, indulgent treat. TKO can leverage this principle to enhance both WWE and UFC’s appeal and expand the viewership within the combat sports and entertainment industry.

Additionally, the partnership presents opportunities to secure lucrative media rights deals in the near future, given the expiration of UFC’s contract with ESPN in 2025 and WWE’s agreements with FOX and NBC in 2024. Attracting enthusiastic and dedicated fans who embrace multi-platform streaming is a significant incentive for broadcasters like Disney, Amazon, and FOX.

Further growth prospects for TKO’s brands include elevating live events, creating new content formats, and increasing sponsorship and licensing opportunities. One of the most exciting aspects of the merger is the potential for cross-promotion among athletes and personalities. Athletes can expand their profiles by transitioning between sports, benefiting both the individuals and TKO by broadening viewership.

This strategy has already informally occurred, with several UFC fighters transitioning to WWE. Now, TKO can officially embrace this approach to market fighters within WWE’s entertainment realm when suitable, fostering a “win-win” scenario for all parties involved. According to Furst, nurturing relationships with athletes across multiple combat sports will bolster TKO’s relevance and influence.
