Biography

Sting, born Steve Borden on March 20, 1959, in Omaha, Nebraska, is one of the most iconic and enduring figures in professional wrestling. He spent most of his career with World Championship Wrestling (WCW), becoming one of the promotion’s biggest stars.

Career History and Evolution

Sting began his career teaming with Jim Hellwig (later known as Ultimate Warrior) in the bodybuilder-themed tag team, The Blade Runners. However, he came into his own as a singles competitor in WCW, where he won his first World Heavyweight Championship in 1990.
Perhaps the most significant evolution in Sting’s character came in the mid-’90s. Originally a bleach-blond, face-painted, energetic character, Sting adopted a darker persona, inspired by the movie “The Crow,” becoming a silent, brooding vigilante. This transformation occurred during the infamous nWo storyline, enhancing the character’s popularity.
Sting continued his career in TNA (Total Nonstop Action) Wrestling after WCW was acquired by WWE. He finally joined WWE in 2014, making a much-anticipated debut at Survivor Series.

Titles and Achievements

Sting is a multi-time world champion, having won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship six times and the TNA World Heavyweight Championship four times. He was also the inaugural inductee into the TNA Hall of Fame and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2016.

Biggest Matches and Rivalries

Sting had several memorable rivalries during his career, with his feuds against Ric Flair, Hollywood Hogan, and Vader standing out. His battles with the nWo remain some of the most memorable moments in WCW history.
In WWE, his match against Triple H at WrestleMania 31 and Seth Rollins at Night of Champions 2015 stand out, despite his short stint with the company.

Tag Team Partners

While best known as a singles wrestler, Sting had several notable tag team partners throughout his career, including Lex Luger, Ric Flair, and Booker T.

Family Life

Sting is married to Sabine Borden, and they have two children together. He’s known for being private about his personal life, but he has been open about his Christian faith, which he embraced in the late ’90s.

Finishing Move

Sting’s finishing move, the “Scorpion Deathlock” (a sharpshooter submission hold), is as iconic as the man himself. He’s also known for the “Stinger Splash,” a corner body splash.

Clothing and Entrance Music

Sting is instantly recognizable by his black and white face paint, a staple during his “Crow” persona. His attire typically consisted of a black trench coat and black tights. His entrance theme in WCW was an ominous, mood-setting piece called “Crow,” while in WWE, he used “Out From The Shadows.”
Sting’s enduring legacy in professional wrestling is a testament to his in-ring skill, adaptability, and deep connection with fans. Whether he was the charismatic “Surfer” Sting or the silent, vengeful “Crow,” Sting left an indelible mark on the industry.
