Biography

Óscar Gutiérrez, better known by his ring name Rey Mysterio, was born on December 11, 1974, in Chula Vista, California. His wrestling career began when he was only 14 years old, trained by his uncle, Rey Misterio Sr., a professional wrestler in Mexico.

Career History and Evolution

Rey Mysterio started his career in Mexico’s AAA (Asistencia Asesoría y Administración) promotion and later moved to ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling), followed by WCW (World Championship Wrestling) in the U.S. Mysterio joined WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) in 2002, where he became a sensation due to his high-flying, Lucha Libre-inspired style.
Over the years, Mysterio’s underdog character has endeared him to fans worldwide. Despite his smaller stature compared to most competitors, he has consistently overcome the odds, evolving from a cruiserweight to a legitimate heavyweight contender.

Major Championships and Achievements

Mysterio is a multi-time world champion, having held the WWE Championship, the World Heavyweight Championship, and the WWE Intercontinental Championship. He’s also a former WWE Cruiserweight Champion and WWE Tag Team Champion. Mysterio won the 2006 Royal Rumble and is the shortest (in height) WWE World Heavyweight Champion in history.

Biggest Matches and Rivalries

Some of Rey Mysterio’s most memorable feuds have been with Eddie Guerrero, Kurt Angle, CM Punk, and Randy Orton. His WrestleMania 22 title win against Angle and Orton is widely regarded as a career-defining moment. His emotional feud and series of matches with Eddie Guerrero, especially their match at WrestleMania 21, are also significant highlights.

Tag Team Partners

Throughout his career, Mysterio has partnered with various wrestlers, such as Edge, Rob Van Dam, and Sin Cara. More recently, he has teamed up with his real-life son, Dominik Mysterio, in various tag-team matches.

Sponsorships

Rey Mysterio has been associated with numerous brands, including Tapout, and has been featured in WWE’s video game series, WWE 2K.

Personal Life

Rey Mysterio is married to Angie Gutiérrez, and they have two children, Aalyah and Dominik, the latter of whom has followed his father into the wrestling business.

Finishing Move

Mysterio’s finishing move is the “619,” named after the area code of his hometown in San Diego. This move involves him swinging through the ropes to strike his opponent with his legs.

In-Ring Attire and Entrance Music

Mysterio is famous for his colorful masks and outfits, often themed after various pop culture icons like comic book superheroes. His entrance music in WWE has primarily been “Booyaka 619” by Mad One.
Rey Mysterio’s exciting high-flying style, combined with his charisma and underdog character, has made him one of the most beloved wrestlers in the history of WWE. Even though he is one of the smaller competitors, Mysterio’s impact on wrestling is enormous, breaking barriers and changing perceptions of what a world champion can look like.
